The early chemical industry began to emerge by the 16th century. The society of the time had a great need for supplies of Alum, Sulphur, Saltpetre, sal ammoniac, as well as alcohol and strong acids. What we can recognise as chemical factories were constructed and these were often described in printed books of the time, illustrated by woodcuts or engravings.
