Tarots for sale by Adam McLean 2014 - French tarots and oracle decks I have decided to sell off a substantial part of my tarot collection over the next few years. Some I will put up on Ebay but most will be available through the series of pages on this site. These can be bought direct from me, paying using Paypal. Back to main sales page l'Oeil de Myrddin ou Tarot des Princes by Philippe Rouchier. France, France Cartes, 1994. 63 cards 123x65mm. This deck is dedicated to Steve Hackett, the guitarist in the band Genesis back in the '70s. Hackett's debut solo album 'Voyage of the Acolyte', 1975, has a tarot theme. Rouchier creates shapes textured as stone or wood, which stand out in relief from the background. At first glance it would seem to be digitally created but on closer inspection the images appear to have been created in oils. The Minor pips are quite unusual, in that 6 cards compress the ten Pips. Thus one of each suit has a card to itself, then two and three are on one card, as are four and five, six and seven, eight and nine, then returning to a single card for the ten of the suit. There is also an infinity card. The booket explains the imagery and structure of the deck in some details. France, , 1997. 22 cards 135x70mm. Giselle Flavie was one of the most famous clairvoyants in France in the late 1990s. She has written many books and taken part in radio and television programmes. In 1997 she issued her 'key of life' or the Oracle de Giselle Flavie. This is not an oracle deck but a true tarot with 22 cards. Being a clairvoyant, Giselle Flavie has of course 'channelled' the text of the little white book that goes with the cards. The art on the cards is by a Russian artist Marina Makovsky, the daughter of the famous Russian academic artist Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky (1839-1915). His daughter, who appears to have lived on into the 1950s, seems to have become one of the Russian émigrés who located to France after the Russian Revolution. Her art is not so technically accomplished as her father's wonderfully detailed oils but is strongly Russian in tone, reflecting Russian illuminated manuscripts and Icons. I doubt whether these were originally conceived as a tarot, though they seem to have been created as round paintings and not merely cropped to that shape. The deck includes two versions of the Fool. One is numbered 0, XXI and XXII and on this the Fool faces to the right. In the other version XXIII the Fool faces left. It is not clear as to whether the cards were circulated in the five years or so before the publication of the book. Each cards has a large emblem as the central image, a small rerpeentation of the playing card in the top left corner and a panel at the bottom bearing a phrase giving a meaning to the card. France, H.Plantin & Cie, Paris., 1966. 50 cards 125x75mm. The artwork was created in 1959 but the tarot was not published till 1966. It must be one of the earliest attempt to create a tarot using an expressionistic style. It is somewhat reminiscent of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the German expressionist painter, as it shares the bold outlines set against an abstract background. Here Joel and Danika Boyer have first created washes of watercolour or more likely gouache on a squared paper and on top of this they have drawn a figure using black paint and a large brush. This tarot is almost unknown and very difficult to find.
