I just found an illustration of an engraving from a copy of Leonardt Thurneisser's Quinta Essentia, 1570 which has been handcoloured. This was coloured contemporary to the printed book by the much neglected 16th century painter Hermann Tom Ring (1521–1597).

This particular copy of the book is now in the Westfalischen Landesmuseum in Munster. I am not sure if the other engravings were coloured.
