Prospero's America: John Winthrop, Jr., Alchemy, and the Creation of New England Culture, 1606-1676 by Walter J. Woodward "Prospero's America examines the transfer of alchemical culture to America by one of English colonization's early giants, John Winthrop, Jr. Winthrop participated in a pan-European network of natural philosophers who believed alchemy could improve the human condition and hasten Christ's Second Coming. Walter Woodward demonstrates how Winthrop and his philosophy influenced New England's cultural formation: its settlement, economy, religious toleration, Indian relations, medical practice, witchcraft prosecution, and imperial diplomacy." http://www.amazon.com/Prosperos-America-Winthrop-1606-1676-Institute/dp/0807833010 Attached Image (viewed 314 times): Last edited on Thu Jun 3rd, 2010 12:07 pm by Paul Ferguson |

Thanks for the information abiut this book. It had escaped my attention. I have now gone and bought a copy. Somewhere among my pile of papers I have a typescript listing of the items in Winthrop's library which a colleague compiled a number of years ago. I had read a few articles by Ronald Sterne Wilkinson in Ambix and another journal written around about 1963, so it will be interesting to see what more recent research has turned up. |

Some are mentioned in this article here by Margaret Mather Byard: http://www.nysoclib.org/collections/winthrop/books_wilderness.html Mark Stavish's article on the history of alchemy in America is also of interest: http://hermetic.com/stavish/alchemy/history.html Last edited on Thu Jun 3rd, 2010 12:11 pm by Paul Ferguson |
