I just found this interesting George Méliès film of 1906 on Youtube L'Alchimiste Parafaragamus ou la Cornue infernale (The Mysterious Retort) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=E8gL4ahDWX4 |

There is another early film on line: Blackton, J. Stuart and Albert E. Smith, producers. The clown and the alchemist; Thomas A. Edison, Inc. USA: Edison Manufacturing Co, 1900. 1m:18s. http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mbrsmi/edmp.0840 I've also got a reference to another Melies film 'The Hallucinated alchemist' (1897), but cannot find a copy online. Plenty of references to it. And: The Alchemist (1913). No other details. |

Original title "L’hallucination de l’alchimiste" (1897). Can't find it online but readily available on DVD (see DVD 6): http://www.heeza.fr/description.php?lang=1&id=1259 There is a still from it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27516417@N00/4456915280/ Attached Image (viewed 2569 times): Last edited on Tue May 8th, 2012 10:25 am by Paul Ferguson |

.
I believe, Paul, that the still is from the segment 1:32 to 1:52 of «La Cornue Infernale» (1906); that is, that the movie's original title was «L’Hallucination de l’Alchimiste» (1897). . |

Yes, I think you are right Carl: http://thebioscope.net/2010/01/08/melies-encore/ " A sharp-eyed viewer of the DVD has pointed out that what is identified as L’hallucination de l’alchimiste / An Hallucinated Alchemist (1897) on the Encore disc is merely a coloured and shortened print of Alchimiste Parafaragaramus ou la cornue infernale / The Mysterious Retort (1906). Note also: http://www.scifi-universe.com/encyclopedie/film/11743-la-pierre-philosophale.htm "Dans son laboratoire, un vieil alchimiste mène des expériences afin de découvrir la pierre philosophale. Il jette différents éléments chimiques dans un chaudron disposé sur un feu, qui explose dans des volutes de fumée. Soudain, de la fumée, surgit une belle jeune femme tenant de l'or dans les mains." It would be interesting to know how he came to be so interested in the subject, and what circles he moved in. |
