I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of/ copy/ photocopy/ anything the following book:
  • Michael Heidelberger; Friedrich Steinle (Editors): Experimental Essays - Versuche zum Experiment
It has the article

"The place of alchemy in the Current Literature on Experiment" William R Newman

In it.  It seems that it is in the Wellcome library, Cambridge, Leeds or Oxford.  I'm rather interested in alchemy and experiments, whether nowadays or the degree of experimentation involved in alchemical manuscripts.

Ultimately if nobody here has it I'll try getting it on interlibrary loan, which should be possible, but is a little complicated and expensive.

I think the Newman paper was re-published in ISIS, 90, 5 (1999) 7

Or was it just reviewed there??? Not sure, but worth checking.

If you have a subscription to JSTOR then you should be able to access it.

Thanks, but that was the first other sight of it I had.  I found an earlier mention in Isis in volume 90 mo. 1 which  turned out to be a notice of publication, with nothing more than authors and chapter headings listed.

I can't seem to find any information on the one you mention, I presume it is a book review but may as well check.

Yes, most likely a book review judging by the page reference.
I don't know whether it would be worth contacting the author direct?

Well, I was thinking of that, but I already asked him recently if his book The Summa Perfectionis of pseudo-Geber had any chance of being reprinted.  It seems nothing is planned just now, although I did point out that there is likely to be demand for it.

Perhaps self publication might be a route for it.

Anyway, I didn't want to bother him too much.  I don't really know him, saw him in Cambridge last year but that's it.
