"'Therefore, [the alchemist] was not a charlatan or a fabulous conjurer, but rather a true specialist of analytical chemistry,' Dr Martinón-Torres said." http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storyCode=181906§ioncode=26 And here is his lovely poster display from Saragossa: http://srs.dl.ac.uk/arch/posters/Martinon-Torres_files/v3_document.htm |

And Marcos is in charge of the course I am not doing here in London... Recently he gave a talk to the RSC marketing group on this sort of research that he had carried out. (I also met a woman there who has just finished her PhD on the Ripley scrolls) The paper in Historical Metallurgy is here: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/archaeology/staff/profiles/martinon/Martinon-TorresRehren2005HMfireassay.pdf I must ask him if there's anything else going on. It is somewhat frustrating how little material does survive. If we had a little more we could judge a few things better. |

I think everyone is already aware of this, but there is also a book on Oberstockstall which is actually quite nice. As far as I am aware this is the closest thing to a complete inventory that has been published. There is also some excellent research on those who created and used the lab. Rudolf Werner Soukup & Helmut Mayer, Alchemistisches Gold. Paracelsistische Pharmaka. Laboratoriumstechnik im 16. Jahrhundert. Chemiegeschichtliche und archäometrische Untersuchungen am Inventar des Laboratoriums von Oberstockstall/Kirchberg am Wagram. Vienna: Bohlau Verlag, 1997. |
