Our library holds a copy of the Ander Theil of Johannes Agricola's Commentariorum, Notarum, Observationum & Animadversionum ... published in Leipzig in 1639 (Ferguson, v. I, p. 12). There is an inscription on the flyleaf in the hand of a previous owner, probably John Winthrop, Jr. (1606-1676), who read widely on and practiced alchemy: "page 369: Brentius scripsit Farraginem Tincturarum Physicarum." There is indeed mention on p. 365 of Brentius and a work with that title by him; my German is not up to the task of understanding more than that. Brentius is almost certainly the theologian Johan Brenz, but I've had no luck in tracking down a work by him with the above title, or any variation on it that I can come up with. Can anyone cast some light on this matter? It would be very useful to us to know why this topic was of interest to Winthrop. Many thanks in advance, Laura O'Keefe New York Society Library |

Hi Laura, Agricola says he was 'formerly a physician in the town of Cham in the Oberpfalz': http://books.google.com/books?id=1v4eAQAAIAAJ&q=brentius+tincturarum&dq=brentius+tincturarum&hl=fr&sa=X&ei=PLDLUMyaLIeo0AWy3YDoDQ&ved=0CDUQ6AEwAA so I doubt if it is Johannes Brenz. See what Ferguson has to say under BRENTIUS (Andreas): http://books.google.com/books?id=q5eZMeCTRaIC&pg=PA124&lpg=PA124&dq=%22Variae+Philosophorum+Sententise%22&source=bl&ots=XQ47U-g45w&sig=XV3zPkqRfoXoXFLdpFly75yBcnY&hl=fr&sa=X&ei=SrLLUOSII4qY1AW3noCgDw&ved=0CDEQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22Variae%20Philosophorum%20Sententise%22&f=false Last edited on Fri Dec 14th, 2012 11:13 pm by Paul Ferguson |
