The Bulletin du Bibliophile for 1892 (pages 183-185 here: http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k58202858/f189.image.r=Bulletin%20du%20Bibliophile%201892.langFR ) mentions an alchemical manuscript in 53 chapters on sale at Techener's bookshop in Paris: "An MS of the 18th century, paper, red morocco, wide dentelle tooling, all edges gilt (early binding). A very interesting manuscript for enthusiasts for the Hermetic Science. Bound in the coat of arms of Madame de Beauharnais, wife of the governor of Martinique and Guadeloupe, the author is, in all probability, the Marquis de Beauharnais, father of François, who died a Peer of France in 1823, and Alexandre, the first husband of Joséphine, who was guillotined in 1794. Indeed, in the margin of the first folio of the chapter entitled 'Laboratoire' we find the legend: 'Researches by the Marquis de Beauharnais from 1765 to 1792, the 79th year of his age'." Other chapter headings include 'Magic lutum', 'Talismanic lutum', 'Resuscitated silver of the corneous moon', 'Of the heat suitable for opening up the Egg of the Philosophers or different regimens of the Fire of the Philosophers' etc. This would be: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_V_de_Beauharnais Has anyone seen this manuscript or have any idea of its present whereabouts? . I'll look it up. This book (bottom link) has the bookplate of 'Hyacinthe Theodore, Baron', whose name comes up sometimes, with a Khunrath MS. in Glasgow (Ferguson 131), or here : http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/books-manuscripts/alchimie-recueil-de-trois-rares-pieces-5560179-details.aspx But the title page has a written ex libris 'Duchesse de Beau????, 1823'. http://books.google.ca/books?id=i3QV58AdOSAC&pg=PP3&lpg=PP3&dq=biblioteca+esoterica+dorbon&source=bl&ots=TlXNPdtqQQ&sig=_AJ4_fv0LcZGSWYJOIZsnGYYjYo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=PsURUfmbCsnf0QGtrYGoAQ&ved=0CGUQ6AEwCQ Can you read the name? . That's great Carl - many thanks! Now that really would be an interesting addition to the Magnum Opus series. I wonder if Adam can get a scan, Paul |
