I remember reading a theory that early alchemists were sort of "different culture" from the craftsmen -- and now cannot remember where it was. Can anyone remember? There is a hint at that in Nathan Sivin's article in _Alchemy revisited_ but my memory seems to be convinced that what I had read was a much more extensive argumentation.
