Salamandram super triplici ararum foco was a work on the salamander written by Johann Wurffbain and printed at Altdorf in 1676. Though not an alchemical work in itself, it does deal with the image of the salamander and includes a number of engravings which echo the depictions in alchemical works, such as the Book of Lambspring and Atalanta fugiens which were issued 50 years ealier than Wurffbain's work. Among the engravings is this rather delightful image which symbolically quotes from a number of alchemical emblems. Attached Image (viewed 4502 times): |

Here is another rather fine engraving of a salamander from the Salamandram super triplici ararum foco. It is in much the same posture as the salamander in Atalanta fugiens Emblem 29. Attached Image (viewed 2524 times): Last edited on Thu Oct 11th, 2007 07:25 pm by adammclean |
