. An interesting frontispiece of a latish (1751) edition of Flamel’s Chymische Werke. http://www.e-rara.ch/cgj/alch/content/pageview/1999069 Note the presence of a ‘monad’ (the hieroglyphic connection, I guess). But below are allegories of Envy, Wrath and Hatred, breaking their arrows on the pavise of a Christ-like figure. a) Can someone read all the text in the halo : “[...] Adjutor [...] Hic Habeo” ? b) And what does this symbol and the "I. P. K." on the shield possibly mean ? . |

A correspondent of mine has asked me to post this:- The frontispiece is taken from "Johann Schütze - Ein altes, sehr schönes und herrliches Tractätlein von dem Gebenedeyeten Stein" Only there is a small difference, in Johann Schützes work the symbols on the shield read I.A.H. and beneath the woodcut we find: Impensis Johan: Adolph: Hærtel: Anno 1682. . Thank you Paul. About the possible printer's device, I'll look up for Hærtel's (as Knopffius' mark are variations on the Rape of Ganymede, lifted almost straight from Alciat).
