I have just read an article by Didier Kahn and become interested in Beroalde de Verville's alchemical novel Voyage des princes fortunez (1610), however, I do not seem to be able to locate a copy either on the Internet or in a library close to me. Has anyone made a study of this work ? Many years ago I tried to read the English translation by Arthus Machen of Beroalde's Le Moyen de parvenir, but could not make much of it at that time. I tried to buy a copy but it is a rather expensive secondhand book. I have a copy of Michael Giordano's Reverse transmutations: Beroalde de Verville's parody of Paracelsus in Le Moyen de parvenir: an alchemical language of skepticism in the French Baroque, from the Renaissance Quarterly 2003, which is quite a dense and detailed study, but nothing on Voyage des princes fortunez. |

Well, first of all, there is the first gathering of plates in Stanislas Klossowski de Rola's book The Golden Game (pages 25-28). Plate 2 is the title page from Le voyage des princes fortunz: Oeuvre steganographique. Commentary on the plate includes one paragraph on the 800-page novel and another on the frontispiece. Could you please post a citation for M. Kahn's article? |

Oops! I sent the same post a second time. How do I delete a posting? I might mention that the other plate reproduces the title page from Beroalde's adaptation of the Hypnerotomachi Poliphili, which tries to place the dream in an alchemical context.
