A correspondent has asked me if I know of a thesis by H. Crothers (Univ. of Aberdeen) on the subject of Donne and Alchemy. Alan Pritchard's Bibliography lists this as an M.Litt. Does anyone have any information on this ? |

I posted an enquiry about this on the Forum of the John Donne Society some time ago - so far 59 views and 0 replies, so it doesn't look good! Did he study at Miskatonic perhaps? Paul |

On the basis that University libraries keep a copy of higher degree theses, I searched for "Crothers" in the Aberdeen library catalogue online. Nothing matching the description came up. |

I had been hoping to get some more information about this thesis, but with no luck so far. So as I had started this particular hare, I will comment. Unfortunately. I did not keep a record of the source for this reference., but ISTR that it was a list of theses on literature from an English (country) web site. As has been stated, there is no record of it via the Aberdeen University library. I have emailed the English department, but so far have had not reply. The MLitt is a taught degree with a dissertation. Subject to getting a reply, my speculation is that (a) this was a thesis that was announced but abandoned, or (b) that it is ongoing and therefore has not hit the formal reporting system, or (c) something else. Subject to further information, I have now flagged this as a probable 'ghost' reference. Searches around Aberdeen have not be entirely fruitless, as I did find some other references to alchemy. I have now had a reply from a member of the teaching staff at Aberdeen, and the position is: "it appears the thesis in question was never submitted, and was discontinued some time ago." So I think that settles the matter.so it did exist in embryo. This particular red herring can be laid to rest & it will not appear in the bibliography any longer. Thanks to those who helped in the search. Alan |
