A crucible is set upon a gridiron resting upon four cubical blocks of stone. Each of these stones has the figure of a lion inscribed upon it, one breathing forth Fire, another Air, and the others Water and Earth. The crucible is flaming and within the flames and smoke we see the symbol of Mercury in the foreground, while further behind are the symbols of the Sun and Moon.
