Why everyone is freaking out about DeepSeek
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 01-26-2025, 03:40 PM - Forum: News - Meeting - Events - No Replies

"As of a few days ago, only the nerdiest of nerds (I say this as one) had ever heard of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI subsidiary of the equally evocatively named High-Flyer Capital Management, a quantitative analysis (or quant) firm that initially launched in 2015. Yet within the last few days, it’s been arguably the most discussed company in Silicon Valley. That’s largely thanks to the release of DeepSeek-R1, a new large language model (LLM) that performs “reasoning” similar to OpenAI’s current best-available model o1 — taking multiple seconds or minutes to answer hard questions and solve complex problems as it reflects on its own analysis in a step-by-step, or “chain of thought” fashion."

Aristotelianism and Magic in Early Modern Europe
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 01-24-2025, 09:38 PM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"Reframing Aristotle's natural philosophy, this wide-ranging collection of essays reveals the centrality of magic to his thinking. From late medieval and Renaissance discussions on the attribution of magical works to Aristotle to the philosophical and social justifications of magic, international contributors chart magic as the mother science of natural philosophy."

  The Scent of Tasmania
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 01-24-2025, 12:49 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Inside the lab, Maryka demonstrates the cold enfleurage ancient Egyptian technique to create scents. Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of ancient Egypt before it was conquered by Rome, loved roses and geraniums. Her perfume merchant would have applied a technique similar to Maryka’s – extracting the flowers’ fragrances by placing them on a layer of animal fat, albeit in a much thicker and stickier form."

  Video: Alchemy against the Anti-Christ
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 01-24-2025, 12:36 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"The rise of the Anti-Christ is among the most feared events in the Apocalypse and one medieval prophet had the perfect weapon against his Satanic forces:  the Art of Alchemy.  John of Rupescissa (d. c. 1365) spent most of his life in prisons composing prophetic predictions of the Apocalypse and curious alchemical works used to both cure the soldiers of Christ, greatly extend their lives and produce the riches needed to build the world of the Millennium."
