  MS Ashburnham 1166
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 07-12-2024, 10:55 AM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

The authorship of the manuscript has been tentatively attributed to Johannes von Teschen or Ticinensis, but it is the artistic style of the illustrations that has attracted considerable attention, as the watercolours have been attributed to the workshop of Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516).
In this depiction, the composition of the elements is represented by letters:
Terra > T (Earth),
Aer > A ( Air)
Aqua > A ( Water)
Ignis > I ( Fire)

The Poesy of Scientia in Early Modern England
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 07-12-2024, 10:51 AM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - Replies (1)

Editors: Subha Mukherji, Elizabeth L. Swann

  * Draws on a wide range of material, from canonical works like 'King Lear' to the lesser known poems of Hester Pulter
  * Includes fresh primary research from regional archives
  * Presents familiar figures in the history of science such as Boyle and Bacon in new and illuminating ways

Includes The Imperfect Circle: Hester Pulter’s Alchemical Forms

"Pulter’s alchemical knowledge is at the crux of each poem’s journey and form. Via the influence of Kenelm Digby and an interest in palingenesis—attempts to resurrect plants from their ashes—this chapter focuses on Pulter’s adoption of alchemical transmutation as the central conceit of her desire to become one with God. Pulter’s detailed understanding of alchemy is evident, I argue, in her knowing rejection of its artificial goals. Her written transmutations of body, soul and poetic form ultimately return to their prima materia, as Pulter chooses imperfect conclusions and awaits the finishing hand of the Divine."

  YouTube Channel: The Alchemical Arts
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 07-12-2024, 10:46 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"The Alchemical Arts channel is a way in which I can share my journey down the Alchemical path. The channel will be as much concerned with the practical side of Alchemical exploration as it will be with the psycho spiritual domain of the Alchemical dream. This channel is also a look into the intricate processes that go into making many of the paints and pigments that I go on to sell. A key philosophy of The Alchemical Arts is to help artists to develop a deeper bond with the materials that they use. So it's my hope that alongside reaching my own Alchemical goals, these videos may also aid in the process of intensifying the relationship between artists and their art - through the mediums that make it possible."

  Internet Archive Petition
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 06-27-2024, 05:48 PM - Forum: News - Meeting - Events - No Replies

"In light of the ongoing legal battle in Hachette v. Internet Archive, Internet Archive is writing to the publishers to urge them to reconsider their stance and restore its access to the books that they have caused to be removed from the Internet Archive’s lending collection. For more than twenty years, the Internet Archive has empowered students, teachers, and readers around the world, providing access to a vital library of books, many of which are otherwise inaccessible to readers due to geographical, financial, or physical constraints. The Publishers' decision to remove books from the Internet Archive is having a devastating impact on readers in the US and around the world, with far-reaching implications."

Free Book: The Science of Naples
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 06-26-2024, 05:54 PM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"Long neglected in the history of Renaissance and early modern Europe, in recent years scholars have revised received understanding of the political and economic significance of the city of Naples and its rich artistic, musical and political culture. Its importance in the history of science, however, has remained relatively unknown. The Science of Naples provides the first dedicated study of Neapolitan scientific culture in the English language. Drawing on contributions from leading experts in the field, this volume presents a series of studies that demonstrate Neapolitans’ manifold contributions to European scientific culture in the early modern period and considers the importance of the city, its institutions and surrounding territories for the production of new knowledge. Individual chapters demonstrate the extent to which Neapolitan scholars and academies contributed to debates within the Republic of Letters that continued until deep into the nineteenth century. They also show how studies of Neapolitan natural disasters yielded unique insights that contributed to the development of fields such as medicine and volcanology. Taken together, these studies resituate the city of Naples as an integral part of an increasingly globalised scientific culture, and present a rich and engaging portrait of the individuals who lived, worked and made scientific knowledge there."
