Perfection of Metals in Medieval & Early Modern Alchemy
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-29-2025, 10:21 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

By Ferdinando Abbri

"For a long time alchemy has been considered a sort of intellectual and historiographical enigma, a locus classicus of the debates and controversies on the origin of modern chemistry. The present historiography of science has produced new approaches to the history of alchemy, and the alchemists’ roles have been clarified as regards the vicissitudes of Western and Eastern cultures. The paper aims at presenting a synthetic profile of the Western alchemy. The focus is on the question of the transmutation of metals, and the relationships among alchemists, chymists and artisans (goldsmiths, silversmiths) are stressed. One wants to emphasise the specificity of the history of alchemy, without any priority concern about the origins of chemistry. "

Probing the Statistical Properties of Unknown Texts: Application to the Voynich Manuscript

By Eduardo Altmann

"The metrics found to be informative in distinguishing real texts from their shuffled versions include assortativity, degree and selectivity of words. As an illustration, we analyze an undeciphered medieval manuscript known as the Voynich Manuscript. We show that it is mostly compatible with natural languages and incompatible with random texts. We also obtain candidates for keywords of the Voynich Manuscript which could be helpful in the effort of deciphering it. Because we were able to identify statistical measurements that are more dependent on the syntax than on the semantics, the framework may also serve for text analysis in language-dependent applications."

The Letter from Isis to Horus
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-29-2025, 10:15 AM - Forum: Alchemy texts - No Replies

"This article investigates how the Letter from Isis to Horus (first-fourth century CE) explores the literary potentialities allowed by the complex cultural backdrop one finds in late antique Egypt. By looking into how this example of alchemical writing both engages with and departs from shared motifs of Hermetism, the Greco-Egyptian magical papyri, and 1 Enoch, it demonstrates how the Letter uses literary artifice in a way that gives alchemical knowledge a specific and distinct voice. It also argues that the cultural mixture of Hermetism, magic, and Scripture represented in the Letter reflects the alchemical procedure of mixing frequently mentioned in the text."

Alchemy & Mathematics in Geber's Theory of Balances
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-27-2025, 01:46 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

In French.

This study analyzes the principal features of alchemical theory in general, with a particular focus on Jābir Ibn Ḥayyān’s contributions. It explores the Aristotelian,
Stoic, and Neoplatonic foundations of his thought, culminating in the so-called “Theory of Balances”—a framework that seeks to reduce all natural phenomena
and scientific knowledge, including cosmology, physics, and alchemy, to laws of quantity and measurement. In the Middle Ages, this theory served as a foundation
for establishing a quantitative system of natural science. Jābir translated the four degrees of intensity of the elementary qualities—borrowed from Greek medicine—
into characteristic numerical series. This study examines the connections between these speculations and Plato’s Timaeus, as well as Pythagorean arithmology, with
particular attention to the reucurring significance of the number 17 in Geber's thought.

Podcast: Isaac Newton’s Experiments in Alchemy
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 12-27-2025, 01:26 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Discover the hidden side of Isaac Newton, the scientific genius behind gravity and calculus, who spent decades secretly obsessed with alchemy. Far from being a mere pseudoscience detour, Newton’s alchemical pursuits involved intense laboratory experiments, decoding ancient texts, and a quest for the philosopher’s stone and divine secrets in matter. Influenced by mysterious figures like Eirenaeus Philalethes, he wrote over a million words on transmutation and metallic “growth.” This forgotten passion shaped his revolutionary ideas on forces and light, revealing Newton not just as the first modern scientist, but the last great magician."

Erica Lagalisse
Occult Features of Anarchism
With Attention to the Conspiracy of Kings and the Conspiracy of the Peoples

"“Erica Lagalisse’s Occult Features of Anarchism is a wonderful and learned provocation. Taking the concept of modern politics as a form of theology and magical ritual, she traces some aspects of the origins of socialist and anarchist politics and performance to the Hermetic tradition that influenced the Radical Enlightenment and its originators, in, for example, the work of Spinoza. But she also argues that this “magical” or Hermetic tradition rested on a masculinist coup against women’s knowledge, especially in the transformation of women healers into malevolent witches."
