"Experimentation does not seem restricted to technical operations: these writings are themselves experiments that result in elaborate and inventive compositions. I investigate in detail what this shift to a literary interpretation entails for four early alchemical works, namely the Letter from Isis to Horus (Chapter I), the Dialogue of the Philosophers and Cleopatra (Chapter II), On the Letter Omega by Zosimus of Panopolis (Chapter III), and Memoirs 10-12 by the same author (Chapter IV). Each chapter starts with a brief introduction to the work’s dating, transmission, and contents, followed by an analysis of how each writing in question approaches conventional textual forms in both expected and unexpected ways."

"This thesis aims at clarifying how alchemists and non-alchemists studied and discussed alchemy in medieval Islam. In order to attain this objective, we first review and reinterpret the accomplishments of Muslim and pre-Islamic alchemists, as well as multiple types of classification of alchemy by non-alchemist authors. Also, we examine in detail non-alchemists’ theoretical discussions of alchemy, which had a large influence on the development of alchemy in medieval Islam, as well as discussions by alchemists. Finally, in order to clarify both stances, we investigate al-Ṭughrāʾī’s Ḥaqāʾiq al-istishhād, which compares alchemists’ theoretical foundation concerning alchemical theories with that of non-alchemists."

"Earlier this month, the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Select Committee published the report Connected tech: AI and creative technology.
We [ alcs.co.uk ] were delighted to see that the report recommended measures that will support and protect authors.
The report warned of the consequences of a proposed copyright exception for text and data mining (TDM), which it said: “risks reducing arts and cultural production as mere ‘inputs’ in AI development.”
The TDM copyright exception, which was dropped earlier in the year, would have allowed widespread usage of authors’ works by AI platforms for commercial use, without permission or payment to the authors.
ALCS campaigned against the introduction of such a TDM exception along with our industry partners, so we are pleased to see the CMS Select Committee reaffirm its opposition to the measure which would risk significant damage to authors and the wider creative industries.
The report recommended that the Government continues to support a strong and robust copyright regime in the UK, is clear that licences are required to use copyrighted content in AI and works to ensure that creators are well rewarded in the copyright regime.
We are also happy to see the importance of copyright acknowledged. In the UK, copyright is central to ensuring writers continue to make a living from their work, and are able to create the content that AI developers, as well as wider society, depend on."
