  Peter Forshaw webinars: Khunrath
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-21-2023, 03:22 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

The first lecture in the Infinite Fire Webinar series focuses on Heinrich Khunrath’s Amphitheatrum Sapientiae Aeternae – “The Amphitheatre of Eternal Wisdom”, which was originally published in 1595. This book  has traditionally been considered a strange mix of Christianity and magic. Peter elaborates on the alchemical symbolism of four circular and five rectangular engravings integrated in the Amphitheatrum, and comments on a number of the other famous engravings in this remarkable work.

Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens: Sources of an Alchemical Book of Emblems
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-21-2023, 03:11 PM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

By HME de Jong

"In the new publication of this important 17th-century work, Dr. H. M. E. de Jong translates the mottos and epigrams of the original 50 emblems and provides a summary of both Maier's exposition and a commentary on each emblem. She discuses the meaning and importance of the Atalanta Fugiens, the sources Maier used, and the mutual relationships between the emblems. She also includes an additional 30 alchemical engravings that explain her research, including several hard-to-find foldouts reproduced here in this volume."

"The text of this manuscript is as enigmatic as are its diagrams; but to him who will meditate upon the profound significance of both, the deeper issues of mysticism in due time will be made clear."

The Anatomical Machines of Prince Raimondo di Sangro
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-21-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Two skeletons stand in a chapel in Naples. Their bones are knit together with an intricate web of veins and arteries that crawl over their ribs and skulls like grey lace. These were the “anatomical machines” of Prince Raimondo di Sangro, an alchemist, Freemason, inventor, and military historian. For centuries, eerie legends have swirled around these two figures."

Alchemy and Religious Orders in Early Modern Naples

Lorenza Gianfrancesco

"In the early modern period Naples was a European centre of learning where a number of scholars engaged with alchemy. Variously perceived as a legitimate scientific practice or as a mendacious trick for gullible minds, alchemy engaged Neapolitan scholars in an ongoing dispute that involved members of the clergy."
