Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-04-2025, 11:37 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Today in 1631, John Winthrop, Jr., one of the most important figures in Connecticut history, first set foot in the New World, having arrived in Boston where his father, John Winthrop Sr., was governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. A Renaissance man of many talents, the younger Winthrop was well-versed in alchemy, natural magic, medicine, and early modern industrial technology,"

The Ultimate Guide to Thoth for Beginners
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-04-2025, 11:32 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"This ultimate guide will introduce you to Thoth’s origins in ancient Egyptian mythology, his appearance and symbols, his powers and domains, and the famous myths in which he plays a role. We will then explore how Thoth’s legacy carried on through the ages – morphing into Hermes Trismegistus in Greek and Hermetic lore, inspiring occult traditions and Theosophy, and sparking modern speculation that casts him as an Atlantean sage or even a cosmic teacher beyond this world. Prepare to journey through time and spirit as we unveil the story of Thoth in both ancient myth and modern mysticism, all in a tone befitting the mystical scribe of the gods."

The Healer: Elizabeth Coates Paschall on Market Street
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-04-2025, 11:24 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"Elizabeth became one of the most prominent women healers in Philadelphia. Two years after her father’s death, at the age of 19, she married Joseph Paschall, the grandson of Thomas Paschall Sr., an apothecary, pewterer, and alchemist who joined William Penn’s 1682 fleet that sailed to Pennsylvania from Bristol, England. Thomas Paschall Jr., Joseph’s father, ran a mill west of Philadelphia and served in the Pennsylvania Assembly. Joseph similarly grew up in a Quaker family, and when Joseph and Elizabeth married, the two moved into the Coates house on Market Street that Elizabeth had inherited from her father. Elizabeth learned alchemical and medical practices from Joseph and his brothers, augmenting what she had already learned from her parents, especially her mother Beulah."

  Rosarium Philosophorum
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 11-04-2025, 10:49 AM - Forum: Alchemy texts - No Replies

"The Rosarium philosophorum or Rosary of the philosophers is recognised as one of the most important texts of European alchemy. Originally written in the 16th century, it is extensively quoted in later alchemical writings. It first appeared in print as the second volume of a larger work entitled De alchimia opuscula complura veterum philosophorum, in Frankfurt in 1550. As with many alchemical texts, its authorship is unknown. Many copies also circulated in manuscript, of which around thirty illustrated copies are extant. There are six manuscript copies of it in our collection, including translations into French, German, and, in the case of this manuscript (Ms Ferguson 210), into English. This latter is also supplied with 20 vividly coloured miniatures pasted in, which derive - with some alteration - from the original printed version."

Elisabeth Moreau

"Recent research on early theories of matter has shown the emergence of atomistic interpretations from the late Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. The Renaissance was a turning point where atomistic theories flourished as transitional accounts which combined ancient atomism,
Aristotelian physics, and alchemy."
