"The paper explores the origins and evolution of alchemical practices, tracing their roots back to Hellenistic and Byzantine influences that were transmitted into the Arab-Islamic culture. It emphasizes the significance of laboratory practices in the development of alchemy, while noting that many recipes shared across various traditions do not necessarily belong to a strictly alchemical doctrine. The text discusses key figures and writings in early alchemical history, supporting its observations with citations from historical texts."

"A manuscript at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America contains the first five chapters of a ten-chapter Hebrew treatise on alchemy. Although Joseph Solomon Delmedigo (1591–1655) is named as the author, the treatise’s intimate connection with Arabic sources, especially the later Islamic alchemy associated with the work of Aydamar al-Jildakī, raise serious doubts about the attribution. The argument is made that even though Delmedigo could indeed have mastered Arabic, the ascription remains questionable. Highlights of the tract are presented. Publication of the text, with English translation and notes, is planned for some future date."

[*]Translated by Mitko Janeski
I. Why do most practitioners of the Hermetic Art, in seeking the Lapidem Philosophorum (the Philosopher’s Stone), or the Stone of the Wise, strive in vain, spending great expense, toil, and labor upon it, and yet are nevertheless unable to find the way on which they work?
II. How may one find it easily and certainly, without great costs, toil, and labor, and use it, to the honor of God and to the blessed service of his suffering, poor neighbor?

"The year was 317 CE, and the Eastern Jin court buzzed with the constant anxiety of a dynasty barely holding together. In his modest quarters within the capital, Ge Hong set down his brush and stared at the half-finished manuscript before him. At thirty-four, he had already served the court faithfully in both civilian and military capacities, helping suppress rebellions that threatened to tear apart what remained of Chinese unity after the fall of the Western Jin."
