  Scottish Glass Society Exhibition: "Alchemy"
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-19-2025, 12:22 PM - Forum: Alchemical symbolism and imagery - No Replies

"The Scottish Glass Society’s 2025 annual exhibition Alchemy is now open at Glasgow’s Trades Hall. Its elegant room with a full wall of windows is the ideal location to display over sixty pieces of fine art glass by more than thirty SGS members, beautifully presented by the SGS’s volunteer display team. The theme of Alchemy was given to members with the aim to inspire pieces which would create a sense of wonder at the transformation of glass from raw materials into precious forms, and while some makers have responded more literally to the theme, all the work on display is clearly informed by their knowledge of the science of working the materials, and their creativity."

The Untold Story of Glass and Alchemy
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-17-2025, 11:33 AM - Forum: Articles on alchemy - No Replies

"In a twist of fate, ancient texts reveal more than just forgotten knowledge; they spark modern intrigue. The 1612 treatise L'Arte Vetraria sheds light on glassmaking techniques, igniting discussions on its significance today.

This groundbreaking work by Florentine priest Antonio Neri reveals the delicate beauty and utility of glass. Interestingly, it merges science and art, illustrating how glass transformed alchemical practices."

  Lucerna Salis Philosophorum
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-17-2025, 11:23 AM - Forum: Alchemy texts - No Replies

"A bare delineation of that much-desired third principle of minerals of Sendivogius, namely the Pontic Salt, which is the subject of all marvels and the sole academy of the ancient Wise, and likewise the key of the Gebric art—locking, sealing, and opening, no one else either revealing or shutting. It containeth also the true preparation of that wondrous soap and of the dry water, which moisteneth nothing, nor admitteth mixture with any other thing in the world, save with metals only: according to the method whereby all the Philosophers attained that universal panacea for the health of afflicted man, as the image and likeness of the glorious God, Who be praised unto the ages of ages."

Floating Gold: the history of ambergris
Posted by: Paul Ferguson - 09-17-2025, 11:08 AM - Forum: Reviews and book notices - No Replies

"Floating Gold:  A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris, by Christopher Kemp.  Rich, sexy, earthy and enticing:  this precious ingredient is prized by perfumers, yet can’t be ‘harvested’:  it’s simply washed up randomly on beaches, being a by-product of the whale’s digestive process.  (Not so long ago, a stroller on a Dorset beach found a lump of ambergris, alleged to be worth up to £80,000.)  Christopher Kemp has woven a fascinating tale around a single fragrance element, bringing to life ambergris’s place in fragrance history and creation.  A book to make beachcombers of all of us."
