When they speak of the philosopher’s stone they are speaking of something utterly real, but it doesn’t happen to be a stone in any ordinary sense, nor does it manufacture metallic gold out of lead—or for that matter out of thin air. “Our stone is not a stone,” the alchemists wrote, and for good measure: “our gold is not the common gold”.”
