Warburg: “As stiffe twin compasses”: Allegory and Sciences
#1
"Organised by Sergei Zotov (Frances Yates Fellow, Warburg Institute)

This two-day international conference explores the rich entanglements between allegory and scientific thought in Europe between 1300 and 1700. From sacred architecture and cosmological diagrams to alchemical figures and medical imagery, the event examines how allegorical modes shaped — and were shaped by — the emerging disciplines of natural philosophy, astronomy, medicine, and early modern science. Bringing together scholars from across Europe and North America, the conference traces the use of allegory not just as a literary or artistic device, but as an epistemic framework — a way of thinking through the world.

Keynote speakers:
Prof. Sachiko Kusukawa (University of Cambridge, Trinity College) & Prof. Sophie Page (University College London)"
