1. Engraving on titlepage. 69x79mm. Divided into two sections. On the left is a depiction of Basil Valentine 'Western philosopher', with 'Theoria' in library of books, and 'Practica' as series of bottles of alchemical substances. Behind him is a symbolic emblem with Moon and Sun, Venus and Mars, surrounding a solar disc at the centre of a hexagram. In the foreground a lion eats a dragon, while a tortoise or salamader is depicted with a saturn symbol upon its back. On the right is Hermes Trismegistus 'Oriental philosopher' holding a world globe and surrounded by various pieces of apparatus. The sun rays pass through a lens and heat a flask. A furnace is alight with a tortoise or salamander with a saturn symbol on its back. In the background is a organ of various pipes tuned to the notes of the planets, and beside Hermes is a viol and bow labelled 'Harmonia'. This plate is also used on the title page of Basil Valentine's 'Revelation des Mysteres des Teintures' published at Paris in 1646 by Jacques de Senlecque.

On the right, a double-headed bird, sheds feathers. Between them on the ground grows a plant with three fleur-de-lys, and in the heavens stands a star filled viol
The sixth has text 'ferment suis qui l'agent et patient anime'. Sun and Moon pour down their influences into a fountain, at the centre of which Mercury stands upon a small pillar enwreathed with a vine and grapes.
The seventh has text 'ie suis de l'univers la vertu Trismegiste'. An elaborate inverted Monas hieroglyphica, bearing signs of the zodiac, the planets and a square of the four qualities.
