Frontispiece engraving (folding). 157x141mm. Two pillars support an arch. At the base of the left pillar is an image of the woman washing clothes from the 'Splendor solis' series, while on the base of the right pillar there is another image, the 'miners working a hill for oar' also from the 'Splendor solis' series. In front of the left pillar stands Basil Valentinus holding a long-necked flask, while on the right Paracelsus holds his sword, the pommel of which contains the "azoth". In the space below the arch is a laboratory at the bottom, while above this is a complex of concentric circles containing a number of symbols. The outermost group of four symbols are associated with Fermentation, the pelican feeding its young, and a crowned dark lion eating a light coloured lion - and with Multiplication, a phoenix rising from its funeral pyre and a man sowing seed. The next group show four symbols associated with alchemical process linked with colours - the Nigredo has a black crow, the manifold variety of colours with the Peacock, the Albedo with the white swan, and the Rubedo with the lion. Inside the innermost circle is a square with Materia prima, Magnesia, Lapis and Chaos, within which is a triangle with "Separa, Dissolve, and Depura", inside of which is a further triangle with "Salt, Sulphur and Mercury" - body, soul and spirit. At the centre is "rebis omnia".]
