1. p8 (of introductory material) Engraving. 180x147mm. Two lions stand rampant, supporting a tree trunk which grows from the earth without branches. The trunk has the symbols of salt, sulphur and mercury upon it. Above the left lion are the symbols for fire and earth, while above the left lion are the elements of water and air. At the foot of the tree is a black crow. On top of the trunk is a circle with cross above (sometimes associated with antimony). In the interior of the circle are small symbols of the sun and moon. On the top of the cross a white bird perches. In the sky above are the sun, moon and stars.
2. p16 (of introductory material) Engraving. 174x145mm. Above a lighted candle is a circular diagram, inside which is a hexagram of interlinked triangles, the star of David. On this is laid a rectangle, forming a complex figure. Mars and Venus are associated with the outside and inside vertices of the upward pointing triangle, while Jupiter and Saturn are in turn associated with the outer and inner vertices of the downward pointing triangle. The Sun is on the outside of the rectangle and the Moon at its interior crossing. At the centre is the symbol of Mercury. The text above is "Naturae Naturantis" and "Naturatae, Mysterium", while below is "In scuto Davidico exhibitum".
