Some of the bubbles are labelled "Sol Magicum", "Mercurius coagulatius", "Luna fixa", "Mercurius philosophorum", "Aurum Potabile", "Lapis philosophorum". Two have burst, "Sol" and "Alkahest Helmonti", and have stung an operator's eyes which he rubs. The three operators sing the notes of the scale in turn "Ut Re", "Mi Fa", and "La Mi". In the background an alembic is heated on a furnace. In the topmost right corner of the laboratory angels appear in clouds, one playing on a harp. They point down at the scene below and speak verses from the Bible about silver and gold.
