Description:
This is subtitled 'Medico, chirurgo, filosofo e alchemista' referring to the medical doctor and alchemist Paracelsus (1493-1541). The 22 Majors use the 22 images from the illuminated alchemical manuscript 'Splendor solis' (British Library version) whose conception was in no way influenced by tarot imagery and had nothing to do with Paracelsus. The titles of the Majors here use the titles of the chapter in the Splendor solis manuscript to which the illustration applies, rather than any tarot association. Arrigo Pecchioli was behind the creation of I Tarocchi del Duomo di Siena, and I Tarocchi del Palio di Siena.
