Sergio Ruffolo ( 1916-1989 ) was an Italian designer , painter and sculptor. He had a considerable influence on Italian graphics. He was an Italian partisan and socialist. In 1982 Mantua hosted a retrospective of his artistic work under the patronage of the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini. In 1997 an extensive exhibition was organized by his hometown, entitled "Sergio Ruffolo. Il sogno dei segni". He created a number of innovative designs for playing cards. The Minors feature suits of hearts, spades, diamonds, clubs. The emblems on the Minors do not relate to the Rider Waite style.
