Description:
After the poem 'l'Ange Liberte' by Victor Hugo (1802 –1885). This is the final section of his vast unfinished epic and religious work 'La Fin de Satan' (1854 -1862). Myrrha painted two versions for arcanum 21 The World which she entitled 'l'Homme enchaine' and 'l'Homme libere' (the chained man and the free man). Three of her images quote symbolically from the 16th century alchemical manuscript 'Splendor Solis', which shows, as part of its sequence of images, a series of symbolic events taking place in flasks. Myrrha reworked these into cards 12, 13 and 15.
