Tarot des Centuries
1986
Dominique Webb adapting Jean-Pierre Payen
France
Art Medium:
Originals were engravings coloured using stencils.
Description:
The cardmaker Jean Pierre Payen (1683-1757) created a Tarot de Marseilles deck in 1713. Using this as a basis, Dominique Webb in 1984-86 reissued this deck with the intention of demonstrating that there was some link between the writings of the mid 16th Century Nostradamus and the 18th Century tarot cards. He reworked the titles of the Payen images to suit this thesis. Le Bateleur - "Branchus" L'Empereur - "Aenobarb" Le Pape - "Grand Pastor" La Justice - "La Balance" XIII - "Lybitine" Temperance - "Le Verseau" Le Diable - "LAntechrist". La Lune - "Selyn" Le Soleil -"Aemathien" This is a reissue by Heron of their Tarot de Nostradamus.
