Future Solleone Tarot
1987
Elisabetta Cassari
Italy
Art Medium:
Pen drawings with watercolour. Much use of hatching in the backgrounds.
Description:
Similar in style to her Solleone Tarot, but here the imagery is shifted into a future world of space-suited figures. The Majors seem to present a linear narrative staring at Il Caos with a descent into an apocalytic view in Il Giudizio Finale. The suits each present self-contained worlds connected to the elements, an Air world where the space-suited figures can fly, a Water world in which, having abandoned their suits, they swim effortlessly, a world of Earth on the surface of the planet, where the figures seem rather melancholic and broken down by their experiences, and an underground Fire world in which the space-suited figures struggle to survive among the cliffs, torrents of fire and strange creatures that inhabit this realm. There are clear links to tarot imagery in the Majors and the court cards of the suits, but this tarot has to be seen as presenting a story. Cassari only hints at aspects of her narrative substructure in the enclosed notes. It is a rather bleak metaphor exploring the supposed negative aspects of technological culture, in tune with much of the science fiction of the 1980s.
