Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry – Meeting at Clare Hall, Cambridge, Monday 15 June 2015

An incredibly varied meeting from alchemy to Arrhenius, elixirs to electrons!

Members are reminded that the first biannual meeting of SHAC in 2015 will be held on Monday 15 June 2015 at Clare Hall, Herschel Road, Cambridge from 10 am to
4.30 pm, including lunch in the main dining hall at Clare Hall. Papers in the morning session will be given by Eoin Bentick, Robin Gordon, Ruben E. Verwaal, Roderick Home and Frank James on subjects including sex and alchemy, women alchemists, analysis of blood, latent heats and Humphry Davy at the Medical Pneumatic Institution. In the afternoon session, Harriet Lloyd, Edward Werner Cook, Carolyn Cobbold, Vangelis Antzoulatos, Irena McCabe and John Perkins will speak on Humphry Davy’s Chemical Lectures in the Press, organic structures, dyes in foodstuffs, thermochemistry, the rise of physical chemistry and Situating Chemistry – a relational database for the history of chemistry.

Meeting attendees will then have the option of going to the History and Philosophy of Science Department in Free School Lane for tea and the ADHOC seminar which will take place from 5pm to 6.30pm. The title of the session is 'Quotidian, Protonic, and Electronic Acidity’, with discussion led by Prof. Klaus Ruthenberg (Coburg University of Applied Sciences) and Prof. Hasok Chang (University of Cambridge). ADHOC (the Association for the Discussion of the History of Chemistry) has been financially supported by SHAC for a number of years.

A programme containing abstracts of all of the papers and a meeting registration form can be found at http://www.ambix.org/future-meetings/
The meeting fee is just £15 for SHAC and ADHOC members, to include lunch and all refreshments, plus transport from Clare Hall to the HPS Department. Others are welcome at £20 each.
