The term 'lupus metallorum', stibnite/grey wolf is prevalent in Basil Valentine’s work and thereafter, but are there any references to the wolf and alchemy in the Middle Ages?
They are particularly anxious to find some references in the 12th century or earlier, as they suspect that some images of the wolf in the French romances may refer to alchemy.
I suspect this may be a bit early, but am uncertain if the wolf was associated with antimony in early alchemical texts. It would be interesting to explore just when this symbol became associated with antimony.
