Kiefer has a long-standing interest in alchemy:

"Kiefer's interest in alchemy has centred in the metaphorical resonance it has for his own painting, although he has also taken seriously the spiritual ambitions of the alchemist and his vision of parallel universes. The artist told me he had been ‘persecuted for years' by a dictum of Robert Fludde: ‘everything on earth has its equivalent star in heaven'."
