I wonder if anyone has seen the recent book published by Lulu:
Philalethe Reveal'd, by Captain NEMO and Fra' Cercone
I tend to hit on it often on Google Books and from what I can see there, the authors compiled a lot of factual information, but somehow I don't feel it is worth buying (especially as the price is so high). Is it just my impression?

There are two volumes with a third containing an index and bibliography. The first, having 766 pages costs UK Pounds 250 about $350. The second volume has 750 pages and costs UK Pounds 228 $300.
The compiler writes on his website:
Volume 1 (768 pages, with a rich array of images, including some little known ones) is dedicated to a critical analysis and the comparison of the first three editions of the Eireneus Philalethes Treatise ( Secrets Reveal'd English - 1669, Introitus apertus to Occlusum Regis Palatium in Latin - 1667, L'Entrée Ouverte au Palais Fermé du Roi in French - 1672) - to which is attached a Chapter on Natural Philosophy. The second Volume (750 pages, has a larger number of images, of different engravings.

There seem to be colour and B/W editions, the latter presumably considerably cheaper. I won't be buying either of them.

I believe the two authors both have strong academic backgrounds, and one is a retired university teacher.

This is good to know. I have little confidence in people writing under the name Captain Nemo.

Thank you, Adam and Paul, for additional information about that book. Still, I am somehow not convinced I should buy it (especially at that price). Although (from what I could see on GoogleBooks) they quote a wide range of sources, their treatment of them and arguments looks rather shellow to me... But maybe that is just because I saw only those fragments.

| Nevertheless, vol. 2, while questioning the traditional identification of George Starkey and Eirenaeus Philalethes and not showing the highest standards of scholarship, has more than five dozen references to Sendivogius in its introduction and appendices and quite a few others to one R. Prinke. If you could borrow a copy by interlibrary loan, you are bound to encounter some interesting theories.

Hello, Tom! Thank you for this. Yes, I noticed the references on GoogleBooks. I will try to get it through interlibrary loan but it may not be easily available, I am afraid, as large libraries tend not to buy from such print-on-demand publishers like Lulu.

It would be hard to find Captain Nemo, last seen some leagues under the sea. I suppose he is the counterpart of a Philalethes, a lover of anonymity or forgetfulness (Lethes) as well as truth (Alethea). .
I think there are many of us who would like to see a good review.

Yes, I've never heard of PoD doing review copies, it's basically a matter of printing copies when the author says they want one or if someone specifically purchases one online. So the author is the best way to go.
