"On March 31st the Wellcome Trust and UCL announced the closure of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine. This decision came in the middle of negotiations concerning the normal quinquennial review of funding for the Centre. The proposal to close the Centre was made by a handful of persons within the Wellcome Trust without, as far as is known, the involvement of any historian of medicine."

I'm finding out more that UCL management are idiots, of the modern management type rather than interested in academic excellence.
See for example MIddlesex university wanting to close its highly rated philosophy department, simply because they reckon they can get more money from other things.

I suspect the decision is also politically motivated as the Middlesex Philosophy department is to the left of anything you can think of.
Petitions do seem to have some effect: it looks as if the Palaeography chair at KCL has been saved, partly thanks to a petition with 8000+ signatures:

And now the Warburg looks as if it's under threat:
"The Warburg Institute of the University of London is facing an uncertain future. As the Süddeutsche Zeitung’s Alexander Menden reports, the source of the problem is the original foundational agreement between the institute and the university. The institute’s library, which was created by the German art historian Aby Warburg, became part of the University of London in 1944 with the stipulation that the university maintain the institute as an independent entity while providing it with adequate furnishings and personnel. That clause has put a damper on the university’s recent plans to amalgamate its many libraries––a move that would have threatened the Warburg Institute’s unique cataloging system."

Middlesex University have now suspended two faculty and several students following the occupation. There's talk of an international boycott of the University:
