In my experience these free fonts usually have spoilers in them to make you buy the full package, but here it is anyway:

Symbola also includes the Unicode extensions for alchemical symbols.

AFAIK, it is totally free. I am using it for special symbols in my bibliography.

Available from http://shapecatcher.com/unicodefonts.html (and other places on the Internet, if you do a Google search). Latest version appears to be 706

Following up on my earlier note about Symbola font

A better source for this is Unicode Fonts for Ancient Scripts (users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/). This is the site of George Douros - the designer of Symbola, which on this site is now at version 708

On the subject of fonts I have recently been transcribing some Renaissance Greek with ligatures and found the following font useful:

http://schmidhauser.us/tools/rgl/

The charts are also worth downloading and contain useful information if you are trying to read ligatured Greek.

Diacritics are inserted separately - you just go back and insert the appropriate diacritic.

There are some very critical remarks in the Comments section but I haven't come across anything better.

Some useful Greek fonts here, as well as hieroglyphics, cuneiform, Maya etc.
