I have another conflict with Greek words on a title page, and I wonder if someone could send me a copy of the title page of the following work:

1. Penotus Penotus palimeis: or The alchymists enchiridion (Wing P1430, ESTC R25029.
Both my 1st ed and Duveen have Penotus in Latin and the 2nd word as Palimosis in Greek. ESTC reckons both of the 1st 2 words are in Greek, and the 2nd word is palimeis.

I know - exactly why I need to go back to the original, and double check.

Obviously a case of variant title-pages (not unusual I would say in books of this vintage, even within the same year):

1. The Beinecke copy seems to have 'palimbios':

http://yufind.library.yale.edu/yufind/Search/Results?lookfor=Penotus

2. The BL copy seems to have 'palimeis': available via EEBO.

3. The U of Wisconsin copy seems to have 'palimeis' (I assume that this is the Duveen copy and that his cataloguer made an error in transcribing the word as 'palimosis'):

Go to http://madcat.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First & search for 'palimeis'.

That is even more interesting. I have written to Yale to get a copy of 'Palimbios'

I am pretty sure that any copies with 'palimeis' are the same item as appears in ESTC.

My suspicion is that the Wisconsin cataloguer has just picked up the record from elsewhere.

I've gone back to my original thesis and in that I have a handwritten transcription of the Greek, which agrees with Duveen - even down to the final s being a standard sigma (σ), rather than a long s (ς)

However - once I see the title pages again, I'll be able to give a proper reply.

Thanks for the Yale ref.
