I have a small pamphlet that I am just about to put on eBay, but also need to complete the record in my bibliography. I have checked all the obvious sources with no success (but see below).

It is a small booklet of unusual shape - 6" wide by 7.3" deep. It is a reproduction of a handwritten document:
A journal of a Rosicrucian Philo{superscript 's'} from April 30th to June 15 1797| containing the process of the Philosophers Stone, and some valuable experiments inventions, astrological judgements etc| Transcribed from the original manuscript by Fred{superscript 'k'} Hockley January 8th 1833

The text is in 3 interlocking circles indicated by | above.

With the covers there are 26 pages.

There is one copy on Amazon from a bookseller that gives the date as 1930 (and the author as Fred Ssorkley. I have somewhere picked up Bristol, 1969 as the publication details.

The Journal takes up the first 16 pages, the final pages reproduce the admission of Bacstrom into the Rosicrucian Order, but not quite the same as in http://www.alchemywebsite.com/bacstrm1.html

Can anyone give authoritative bibliographic details for this item, please.

Yes, almost certainly the same manuscript, but definitely not the HFC copy. I probably bought mine in the '70s and it is only a paper cover - not the leather that they are offering. I'm not sure I would pay £50+ for it.

Cross-checking again against the transcriptions on the two urls that you gave, I definitely read astrological 'judgments'(sic!) and not 'ingredients'

I can't show the image as it is bigger than the allowed size.

Sorry, too quick on the draw as usual...

Presumably this is the "small, paperback" edition referred to in this blog:

http://www.thelema.nu/archives/316

"no bibliographic information included" :(

Maybe a J.W. Hamilton-Jones publishing effort?

Have written to Crow to check it out.

As for Hamilton-Jones - who is the expert on him?

H-J seems to have been a Freemason who edited, translated (e.g. John Dee's Hieroglyphic Monad - NOT a very highly regarded translation by the looks of it) and sometimes self-published booklets and pamphlets on alchemy and related subjects in the immediate pre-war and early post-war era. John M. Watkins also published some of his stuff.

I just thought this Hockley transcription was the sort of thing he might have put out. Maybe Adam has more information?

Disregard the suggestion below the asterisks. I posted it before reading the exchange with Paul Ferguson.

Surely, Bob Gilbert could help with information on Hamilton-Jones.

I wonder if this is an extract from Hockley's edition of alchemical texts.

There is some brief info about Hamilton-Jones in the Ritman Library catalogue for their "Tried and Tested" exhibition in 2004. See section 29 of:

http://www.ritmanlibrary.nl/c/r/pdf/Catalogue.pdf

He was tied up with the TS, and contributed to their periodicals, e.g. the article on "Occultism and Mysticism" here:

http://www.theos-world.com/archives/show.php?NAME=tw200007&PATH=txt&DESC=July%202000%20Issue

and the one on "The Hermetic Teaching" here:

http://theosophy.katinkahesselink.net/canadian/Vol-26-8-C-Theosophist.htm

In recent years Kessinger have been reprinting some of his works.

H-J was head of the Phoenix Lodge of the Theosophical Society, who seem to have had their own London bookshop for a short time (not to be confused with the famous postwar Phoenix Bookshop in New York). See:

I think that you were pointing in the right direction.

I have had an email from Alan Thorogood who reads this Forum, but is not a member:

"The work in question was published by R.A. Gilbert in 1970. The facsimile is mentioned briefly by Christopher McIntosh in 'The Rosicrucians' (Weiser, 1997) p. 83 and John Hamill in 'The Rosicrucian Seer' (Aquarian Press, 1986) p. 65 although both of these omit bibliographic data.

The only complete listing I have seen is in Gilbert's catalogue no. 38, 'Hermetica' summer 1983:
Hockley, F. A Journal of a Rosicrucian Philor. from April 30th to June 15th, 1797 containing the process of the Philosopher's stone, and some valuable experiments, inventions, astrological judgements, &c. Transcribed from the original MS. by Fredk. Hockley, January 8th 1833. 15pp. *With* Copy of the Admission of Dr. Bacstrom into the Society of the Rosy Cross by the Comte du Chazal at the Island of Mauritus 1794. Transcribed by Fred. Hockley. 6pp. (facsimile of the original MS., Bristol 1970) sm. 4to perfect bound."

I also have a 2004 catalogue from Gilbert and it appears in there as well.

Publication by Gilbert ties in with the place Bristol that I had got from somewhere.

Thanks all for the help & suggestions.
