|
The recent exhibition in the Science Museum Signs, Symbols, Secrets: an illustrated guide to alchemy, is showing what it describes as a newly discovered Ripley scroll.
Does anyone have any details of this or images of this particular manuscript?

The Science Museum website has the additional information about an owner.
The names "FREND" and "J. Johannes" are written on a canvas section at the foot but these are the only clues.
Regarding the "Frend" and "J. Johannes" we might look
to the English alchemical writer John FREIND [1675-1728] who wrote :
Praelectiones Chymicae, in quibus omnes fere Operationes Chymicae ad vera Principia et ipsius Naturae Leges rediguntur, ann. 1704. Oxonii, in Musaeo Ashmoleano habitae. London 1709, Amsterdam 1710, Amsterdam 1718, London 1726.
Pehaps the scroll could have passed through his hands. His connection to
the Ashmolean would surely have exposed him to the Ripley Scrolls
there.

The Science Museum's is obviously related to the version in the Getty Center in Los Angeles, as here it seems to be a mirrored image. In the other scrolls he is truned to the left and downward. Here is the top section of the Getty, for comparison.
