I think that's the best way of looking at it. I read it a few years ago and it rattled along okay, but IIRC it completely missed the complexities and realities of Hermeticism, basically like the authors had read lots of summaries of the topic and picked what they wanted from them. There were lots of facts but somehow it didn't have any heart to it.
