Following on from Adam's December 15th entry in his Alchemy Weblog regarding whether the figure in the foreground of the painting of an alchemical laboratory by Jan van der Straet is Francesco de Medici:

...this identification was made by Helmar Schramm, Ludger Schwarte and Jan Lazardzig in "Collection, Laboratory, Theater: Scenes of Knowledge in the 17th Century", published by Walter de Gruyter, 2005, ISBN 3110177366, 9783110177367, fig. 6, page 118.
Below is Angelo Bronzino's portrait of Francesco (1551, now in the Uffizi). The identification seems plausible: the hairline, nose, eyes and - especially - the misshapen left ear all seem to match closely.Attached Image (viewed 1936 times):

Francesco may have met a sticky end:
"Historians have long suspected that Francesco de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and his second wife Bianca Cappello did not die of malaria but were poisoned — probably by Francesco's brother, Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici, who was vying for the title.
"Now, forensic and toxicology experts at the University of Florence report evidence of arsenic poisoning in a new study published in the British Medical Journal."
