"The relationship between alchemy and Freemasonry is a subject that I’ve written about in my recent work The Lost Rites and Rituals of Freemasonry; certainly some of the symbolism used in English Freemasonry reflects the theme of the transmutation of a Freemason – how to make a good man better, the journey from apprentice to master being part of a pathway to perfection and excellence.

Certain rites from the eighteenth century such as Count Cagliostro’s Egyptian Rite and Melissino’s Rite refer to alchemy or chemistry in their respective rituals, especially in the way the process of alchemy is said to change certain substances; alchemy being used not only as a reminder of the philosophical ideas of the time, but as a metaphor for the journey of the Freemason as he (or in the case of Cagliostro’s Rite – he or she) continues through the higher degrees, transmuting to perfection accordingly as he/she discovers the lost knowledge of the ancients."

The Kilbirnie Gallery is hosting an important exhibition by three of the major artists in the West of Scotland - Ashley Cook, Claire Paterson and Karen Strang. Although they have very different styles, they share an interest in alchemy. Two of the pieces, in particular, draw on the image of the man emerging from the swamp from the Splendor Solis manuscript. The exhibition will open this coming Saturday 3rd of June at 2.00. As there are a large number of items, we will be using the underground gallery.

This book, which was written to accompany a major exhibition at The Corning Museum of Glass in 2008, brings together the results of studies by scholars in four countries. The first two chapters introduce the concept of alchemy in the 17th century and its relationship to artisans. Five contributions trace developments in European glassmaking and advances made by alchemists /glass technologists. The success of European glassmaking in the Baroque period is illustrated by a catalog of 117 objects in the collections of the Corning Museum and other institutions. The catalog includes 35 gold ruby glasses, as well as the gold and silver ingots that the alchemist and porcelain inventor Johann Friedrich Böttger reputedly “transmuted” in 1713.

This article presents the decryption, historical analysis, and alchemical interpretation of an alchemical cipher found in a shared notebook of John and Arthur Dee (British Library MS Sloane 1902). The cipher is an early example of a Bellaso/Della Porta/Vigenère type, a strong encryption method which was historically deemed indecipherable. The essay explores the medical and alchemical context for the manuscript into which the cipher was copied and provides the transcription, plaintext solution (in Latin), and English translation of the encrypted text. Further, it interprets the enciphered text through the lens of alchemical practice and provides evidence for the dissemination of this cipher as part of a larger alchemical knowledge network.
