Apart from a couple of items created at the end of the 14th century, the fifteenth century saw the birth of emblematical alchemical imagery. As book printing did not get underway till the last part of the 15th century and in any case there were very few early printed books on alchemy, this type of alchemical sysmbolism was mostly developed in the 15th century in manuscripts.
