Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks Series
This series of limited edition hand-bound books by Adam McLean were initially produced between 1979 and 1986. They were never sold through book dealers, but only by direct mail order. Consequently, these books became collectors items, often fetching high prices on the second-hand market. Only a few copies remain of some of the older titles in this series and a number are now entirely sold out. Since 1997 fourteen new titles have been issued with more in preparation.
No. 22. Atalanta fugiens
Translated and edited by Joscelyn Godwin, with a commentary by Hildemarie StreichThe alchemical engravings in Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens 1617 are familiar to many students of alchemy, but not everyone is aware that this is a multi-dimensional emblem book extended with fifty fugues or short pieces of music, together with the fifty emblems, epigrams, verses and allegorical discourses. In a sense it is one of the first multi-media conceptions.
For this edition Joscelyn Godwin has translated anew the epigrams and verses that relate to the emblems, and transcribed Maiers music into modern notation. Also included is a commentary by Hildemarie Streich, a Jungian analyst and musicologist, which helps to unravel the symbolic content of Maier's book and the historical context from which it emerged.
When working on this book Joscelyn Godwin produced the first ever recording of the complete cycle of Maier's alchemical music, sung by a professional early music group directed by Richard Wistreich.
Atalanta Fugiens is a complete audio-visual fusion of alchemical and mythological symbolism, wherein the development of the engravings and the music mirrors the unfolding of the alchemical process.
This edition of Atalanta Fugiens represents the first opportunity in over 350 years for Michael Maier's great scheme of emblematic, allegorical, musical contemplation to be experienced in its totality, and will be welcomed by all students of alchemical symbolism, Renaissance Hermeticism, and the Western inner traditions.
A cassette tape of Michael Maier's alchemical fugues is included with this volume.
Limited edition of 250 signed and numbered copies. 184pp. 79 illustrations.
